Pretzel Wrap Class Description

During this class, students complete their own Pretzel Wrap.  Yep, you’ll walk out with a finished garment.  It’s a one-size-fits-most wrap with sleeves.  This wrap is called pretzel because it is worn with a crossover, either at the back or the front.  This is different from other patterns for this type of garment because it has short rowing to keep the fabric from sagging too much at the center.

Have you been curious about machine knitting?  This is the best way to try it out without a big financial obligation.  Beginners are very welcome.  This class is geared around people who have never used a machine before and those that have knit some but are still new to machine knitting.

You get to choose which yarn you wish to knit.  The yarn is provided for you.  Your options are fingering (thin) weight or worsted (thicker) weight yarn.  The pink garment in the photo is fingering weight and is worn with the crossover in the back.  The blue garment is worsted weight and is worn with the crossover in the front.  The yarn used during the workshop is a quality natural wool.  It’s dyable.  So, if you want a different color than the natural ecru, dye it to your preferred shade.  Different machines knit different weight yarns, so availability is based on the number of machines available for each yarn weight.  First come, first serve for the 5 spots for fingering weight and the 3 spots for worsted weight.

The techniques within this project are increasing/decreasing across the width of the fabric, cable twists, out of work (OW) needles, short-rowing, ribbing, binding off, and mattress stitch.  The instructor will help you each step of the way.  It’s practically a one on one session with an experienced knitter.

How long will the class last?
We all knit at different paces.  Some could finish their garment in 4hrs, others might need the whole 6 hrs.

Do I need to provide my own machine?
Nope.  Isn’t that grand?  A knitting machine will be provided for your use during the workshop.  If you would like to use your own knitting machine, that’s fine too.  It must be one either 4.5mm or 9mm gauge.  Please let the instructor know in advance if you plan to bring your own machine.

Will lunch be provided?
No, lunch will not be provided. Please bring your lunch. We will take a break at lunchtime.

Instructor Bio

Susan Fowler

Susan has been a machine knitter since 1996.  She tried hand knitting but decided there had to be a faster way.  Being an industrial engineer, she searched for a machine and purchased her first machine in Aurora, CO.  She has been an instructor at the KnitCraft machine knitting seminars in Kansas City and has published patterns.  She especially likes machine knitting because there seems to be no end to the different looks one can create.  Susan spends every free minute concocting or knitting the next project.  Susan uses her machines to knit almost everything.  But she mostly knits socks, blankets, slippers, and sweaters of her own design.  She recently retired from Hallmark Cards and now spends half of her time in Tucson, AZ where her son lives, and the other half in Kansas City where her daughter lives.

Susan’s mission is to create and feed passion in others for machine knitting.  Hopefully her classes will pass along some encouragement and motivation on to you!
