ADMISSION

Are you machine knitting curious? During this seminar you will learn what you need to know to start your machine knitting adventures.  You’ll get to touch examples of what yarn to use for each of the different machines.  You’ll get to touch samplers of the different stitch techniques made with one and 2 bed machines.  We’ll look through stitch pattern books highlighting the endless possibilities of machine knitting.  And to help visualize how that translates to wearable items, the instructor will share various items she made using the various capabilities of knitting machines.  Next, we’ll dive into machine types and the differences between them.  We’ll talk through how to decide which machine is best for you, where to buy it, and how to learn to use it.   This is a rare opportunity as the instructor will have a collection of machines set up.  These machines are carefully selected to demonstrate capabilities of basic machines all the way through to electronic machines. She will physically demonstrate the machines’ capabilities so that you can see in person, not just a picture.   Then it’s your turn to get hands on experience.  No machine knitting experience needed!

Machine knitting a hat is an immensely satisfying project. By the end of this workshop, you will have not only a beautiful, functional hat but also the foundational skills to explore the limitless potential of machine knitting. So, select your yarn color from provided yarn and let the rhythmic motion of the knitting machine guide you into the broader realm of machine knitting.  We’ll use a basic adult-sized, beanie-style hat pattern.  After a brief orientation with your machine, we will go through the steps of knitting the hat: knitting the brim, creating the body including a stripe, decreasing for the crown, removing fabric from machine, seaming and finishing.

Please plan to bring a packed lunch.

Instructor Bio:

Susan has been a machine knitter since 1996.  She has been an instructor at various machine knitting events and has published patterns.  She especially likes machine knitting because there seems to be no end to the different looks one can create.  Susan spends every free minute concocting or knitting the next project.  Susan uses her machines to knit almost everything.  But she mostly knits socks, blankets, slippers, and sweaters of her own design.

Susan’s mission is to create and feed passion in others for machine knitting.  Hopefully her classes will pass along some encouragement and motivation on to you!
