Ticket price includes 2 full 3-4 hour classes, material for the fairy wing laser cut "veins", the framework, iridescent vinyl, paints, alcohol inks, ribbons and flowers. If you would like specific colors or flowers be sure to message the instructor prior to the class to see if you need to purchase additional materials.
Come and learn from our resident wing expert how to make fanciful fairy wings! Alexis Noriega of The Crooked Feather has years of experience making all kinds of wings and knows the process inside and out. You can check out her work on Instagram
The classes will cover how to create vector files to make custom patterns, how to use the laser cutter and cut your designs, and how to decorate your wings and the steps involved. Please note that wing making can be time consuming, especially while you are learning. Students should expect to come in during open hacks or member hacks to finish off your wings.
This first class will focus on how to create vector files to make custom fairy wing designs, and on using the laser cutter to cut out those designs. We will go over how to properly turn on and use the laser, how to adjust the bed, change the origin etc, how to use light burn, bring in vector files, modify shapes, troubleshoot both software and laser issues, go over appropriate and prohibited materials. We will briefly go over various programs and ways to create fairy wing shapes and pitfalls to wing design and what to look out for. Fairy wing patterns will be provided with errors to challenge students retention of the knowledge gained.
For this first class, students will walk away with basic knowledge of how to use the laser cutter and lightburn, and counts as an "Intro to the laser cutter" class. Members may use this as their intro class and come in during staffed hours to finalize their certification on the laser. Members will need to demonstrate retention of the class principles, proficiency with the laser and computer, and safety precautions to gain final certification.
Students will need to come in on their own time during staffed hours to cut out their wings on their own. The cut time is generally 1-3 hours depending on the size and complexity of the design, so we cannot possibly get everyone's done within the class time. This gives students the opportunity to create and cut their own design prior to part 2. Students may also choose to use a pre-made Monarch or Cicada design.
