As an all-volunteer run organization, KMKR relies on volunteers to do the work that keeps us on the air, expands our content and gets the word out about our station. We're always looking for new volunteers to help with the everyday work of running and improving KMKR.
Below is an incomplete list of common, important tasks:
We also seek out those who are interested in holding positions in the KMKR hierarchy. Below, you'll find a list of positions in KMKR that may* need filling or that can be enhanced with the inclusion of another member in that role.
* The positions listed below are not necessarily open for new volunteers to fill. Please send us an email to enquire about them.
DJ/Content Creator - The term, “DJ” refers to all content creators (i.e. anything that plays on KMKR-LP), regardless of whether they “spin discs”, have a personal, on-air presence or pre-record their shows and produce and upload them remotely. To start the process of becoming a DJ, click here.
Program Director - The Program Director, in conjunction with a programming team, is responsible for screening volunteer DJs, assigning member air-time, scheduling recording sessions, coordinating screening of pre-recorded programming, and directing program scheduling. KMKR welcomes public input and seeks ideas that will periodically revise our weekly schedule. We use a Programming Team to help apportion airtime.
Operations Manager - The Operations Manager is responsible for maintaining the RadioDJ automated broadcast system. The Operations Manager installs and performs preventative maintenance on the station's control consoles, boards, recording equipment, microphones, and a wide variety of other station equipment and electronic systems. The Operations Manager also maintains all of the automated logs and oversees the daily broadcast logs.
Broadcast Engineer - The broadcast engineer is responsible for the technology necessary to put the station's broadcast "on-the-air" within the station's licensed range. The engineer works to maintain existing broadcasting capabilities and provides quick solutions to problems that may arise with the transmitter, tower, and other related equipment.
Volunteer Organizer - The KMKR-LP volunteer organizer will assign tasks within the radio station for work-trade members who wish to do radio station-specific tasks. Xerocraft has an overall Volunteer Coordinator who maintains the work-trade tracking system. All work-trade time, wherever it is put in, counts toward membership. The radio station in particular has a number of preparatory tasks that need to be done on a regular basis to keep the station operational and up to date.
Music Director - The Music Director is responsible for soliciting, receiving and reviewing local music for the station. Should we decide to create a station library of new music, the director will “track” the number of plays received by various recordings, creating our weekly station “top 30” and reporting back to the music labels who will supply the station with recorded music.
Events and Public Affairs Director - This person is in charge of the Event coordination and the Public Affairs Team. The team is responsible for gathering and reporting stories of interest to our listening area, including those stories other news organizations may ignore.
Production Manager- The Production Manager connects people with the equipment and training they need to record and edit material for broadcast. The Production Department is a team responsible for membership training in the skills needed for basic recording (both in‐studio and in the field), and mixing and editing of all types of pre-recorded content produced for broadcast at KMKR.
Social Media and Publicity Director - This person is in charge of the Social Media and Publicity Team. The team is responsible for creating an online presence and keeping it current and relevant as well as setting up publicity concepts, organizing publicity campaigns through street media, flyers, posters, press releases, and other activities to get our presence felt in the central Tucson community we can reach.
