Foundry Shop Rules

Guidelines For Forge Access

The following rules and guidelines must be followed in order to preserve the open access capabilities for Xerocraft Members.

  • Forge access will coincide with Xerocraft Member shop hours: 8 Am - 10 Pm daily.
  • Shop closing procedures must be followed to ensure security of equipment within the Foundry and the rest of Xerocraft. Verify that all gates and locks are secured (rear access and front), lights off , propane cylinders closed, electric cords coiled, floor sweat and clear or debris, etc.
  • Ensure welding shed, shop gate, and forge gate are completely secured and closed when finished working.
  • No long term storage of personal supplies and projects.
  • Safety class is required for open access or any staffed access.

Forge Rules

  1. Safety glasses, and closed toed shoes are required while working within the foundry at all times. Any other protection you choose not to wear is at your own risk.
  2. Call “Hot Steel” when carrying any clearly hot or potentially hot pieces to and from the forge so other people are made aware.
  3. Practice safe and controlled movements when others are nearby, especially near the forge. Turn your head, then your body before you move with an object in your hand.
  4. Be prepared to share. In the event there are more people than anvils:
  5. Don't leave your tools on the anvil
  6. Offer to share anvils and hammers
  7. Quenching oil container must always be closed unless preparing to quench. High carbon steel only. Do not move or relocate.
  8. Donations for time spent using fuel are encouraged. More time spent means larger donations. ($5 for every 2 hours using the forge as an example)
  9. Bring your own consumables (grinding belts, angle grinder disks, flat disks, steel, etc.) Belt sanders, grinding disks, square stock steel, flat stock steel, and other high value steel around the shop are reserved for classes only.
  10. Sweep/dust off the workbench and floor to collect the leftover materials from any grinding work.
  11. Tiny forge is off limits and limited to classes and off-site events.
  12. Document and communicate any damaged tools or equipment to a shop a manger.
  13. When in doubt, do not use any tool you are unsure of and ask for help from a staffer or shop manager.

These rules are subject to change and may be modified based on the needs and performance of the shop and its members.

Thank you

Donations For Fuel and Other Purposes

Donations are always welcome as we have ongoing projects, wish lists for shop equipment, and for propane. Xerocraft is a non-profit member run volunteer organization. Thank you!
