General Roles

Front Desk Staffer

Volunteer reports to the General Manager (Jeremy Briddle)


Summary: The Front Desk Staffer is responsible for the front desk during high volume hours.   This position helps extend the capacity of Xerocraft to share skills and knowledge.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintains a constant presence at the front desk
  • Greets members and guests when they enter
  • Makes sure all members sign in
  • Makes sure all guests sign in or fill out a waiver form (legibly)
  • Gives general information about Xerocraft 
  • Arranges for tours
  • Informs both members and attenders of safety dress code for some shops
  • Reminds members and guests to sign out when leaving
  • Leaves the front desk area clean and organized


Required Qualities

  • Dependable and punctual
  • Able to commit to a regular schedule of work.
  • Good communication skills
  • Respectful and thoughtful when interacting with others. 
  • Committed to safety.
  • Able to take instruction and correction when necessary.


Time Commitment:  12 hours per month. Other arrangements may be accommodated with the permission of the General Manager.



Open Hack Staffer (Front Desk)

Volunteer reports to the General Manager (Jeremy Briddle)


Summary: The Open Hack Staffer is responsible for staffing the front desk during Open Hack hours.   This position helps extend the capacity of Xerocraft to share skills and knowledge.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Installs signs in open and closed shops
  • Installs and updates the staffing signboard
  • Unlocks the door and installs the open hack sandwich board
  • Maintains a constant presence at the front desk
  • Greets members and guests when they enter
  • Makes sure all members sign in
  • Makes sure all guests sign in or fill out a waiver form (legibly)
  • Gives general information about Xerocraft 
  • Arranges for tours
  • Informs both members and attenders of safety dress code for some shops
  • Reminds members and guests to sign out when leaving
  • Locks door at end of Open Hack
  • Puts away signage and files waivers
  • Leaves the front desk area clean and organized

Open Hack Staffer (Floating)

Volunteer reports to the General Manager Jeremy Briddle)


Summary: The Open Hack Staffer is responsible for giving tours and  maintaining a safe environment during Open Hack hours.   This position helps extend the capacity of Xerocraft to share skills and knowledge.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Circulates throughout the building to ensure safety of open hack participants and security of the facilities
  • Helps guests get to the correct shop for their projects
  • Gives tours when requested
  • Presents information about Xerocraft membership
  • Stops anyone participating in  unsafe behavior 
  • Makes sure proper PPE is used
  • Reports any safety problems to the front desk staffer and to the Open Hack Coordinator
  • Makes sure all guests vacate Xerocraft at the end of Open Hack (members may stay)

Open Hack Coordinator

Volunteer reports to the General Manager (Jeremy Briddle)


Summary: The Open Hack Coordinator is responsible for maintaining  secure and functional Open Hack hours.  They will ensure there is adequate staff to run a safe  open hack. They will be present at Open Hack on a consistent basis (at least 9 hours per month) to oversee operations and support the staff.  This position helps extend the capacity of Xerocraft to share skills and knowledge.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Ensuring a Front Desk Staffer is present for the duration of Open Hack
  • Ensuring a Floating Staffer is present for the duration of Open Hack
  • Ensuring that at least 3 Xerocraft areas are staffed
  • Maintaining a safe environment during Open Hack
  • Serving as a mentor and resource for Open Hack Staff
  • Leaving the facility in a clean and secure state at the end of Open Hack

Shop Staffer Roles

These roles support specific shops and require the skills and experience necessary to support members in these areas.

Shop Staffer: 3D Printing

Volunteer reports to Adrian Barton and Rebecca Williams


Summary: The 3D printing shop staffer will ensure the safety of visitors to the studio and the tools contained therein.  They must report any problems to the shop manager as soon as possible. The 3D printing shop staffer will assist Xerocraft members with the 3D printing tools and software, when asked; and if possible, with the making of their projects. They should be present in the shop on a consistent basis so that members can plan their projects for when help is available.  They are also responsible for leaving the shop clean and properly closed at the end of their shift. This position helps extend the capacity of Xerocraft to share skills and knowledge.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Monitoring the safety of visitors and the shop equipment
  • Helping members, when possible, with their 3D printing projects
  • Troubleshooting problems with member projects when asked
  • Good working knowledge of slicing software (e.g., Cura)
  • Enforcing Xerocraft standards for 3D printing materials and procedures
  • Basic knowledge of 3D design is helpful
  • Maintaining a clean shop and keeping tools in good repair


Required Qualities

  • Working knowledge of basic 3D printing techniques
  • Demonstrate competence in the use of the following software and machines in the shop: modeling software, 3D printing machines

      12 hours per month, preferably one 3-hour shift each week. Other arrangements may be accommodated with the permission of the manager.


Shop Staffer: Blacksmith Shop

Volunteer reports to Blacksmith Shop Manager, Gene McDougall

Summary: 

The Blacksmith shop at Xerocraft (XC) is focused on transforming ferrous metals into a variety of shapes using manual tools (hammer, tongs, dies, etc.) and power tools (grinder, drill press, bandsaw), and the application of heat. The shop is less than a year old and is currently undergoing a growth phase of which you can be a part. This includes training to use our custom forge and anvils, and learning the basics of safety around extremely hot metal that is repeatedly hammered.

You will have the opportunity to train with some of Tucson's most well-respected blacksmiths, learning to assist them, and eventually helping to monitor students practicing on the forge during open sessions. You will assist in developing XC's fledging blacksmithing program into a mature shop, offering the Tucson community the ability to work with steel outside of structured programs. We need you to be motivated and actively engaged to promote this dying art while ensuring everyone remains safe and has fun, learning experience.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Time commitment of minimum 12hours per month, one Open Hack Saturday and one Open Forge per month. 
  • Ability to work independently, often without direct supervision, as scheduled
  • Willingness to learn safety guidelines, abide by them and instruct others on their use
  • Willingness to learn the XC online scheduling system
  • Ability to communicate via email and/or text
  • Basic working knowledge of MS Word or similar
  • Dependable and punctual
  • Willingness to accept constructive criticism and comply with instructions and policies


Preferred Experiences:

  • Metal or fabrication shop experience in metalworking (or blacksmithing of any kind)
  • Working knowledge of power tools, including hand grinder, bench grinder, drill press/hand drill, band saw and torch
  • Teaching experience in trades or academic setting

Note: XC recognizes the nontrivial hazards of an operating blacksmith shop, including the potential for significant bodily harm. For this reason, you must never be impaired while working in or near the blacksmith area. You must agree not to consume intoxicants, including cannabis, alcohol, and other drugs immediately before or during your shift. Violations of this policy may result in immediate forfeiture of your volunteer position and endanger your XC membership.

Shop Staffer: Craft Shop

Volunteer reports to Lisa Grenier, Volunteer Coordinator


Summary: The craft shop staffer will ensure the safety of visitors to the shop and the tools and machines contained therein.  They must report any problems to the volunteer coordinator as soon as possible. The craft shop staffer will assist Xerocraft members with the shop tools and machines, when asked; and if possible, with the making of their projects. They should be present in the craft shop on a consistent basis so that members can plan their projects for when help is available.  They are also responsible for leaving the shop clean and properly closed at the end of their shift. This position helps extend the capacity of Xerocraft to share skills and knowledge.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Monitoring the safety of visitors and the Craft shop equipment
  • Helping members, when possible, with their craft shop projects
  • Troubleshooting problems with member projects when asked
  • Maintaining a clean shop and keeping tools in good repair


Required Qualities

  • Dependable and punctual

  • Good communication skills
  • Respectful and thoughtful when interacting with others. 
  • Working knowledge of basic crafts techniques
  • Demonstrate competence in the use and location of the at least 3 of the following areas:
  • Papercrafting (origami and scrapbooking)
  • Machine sewing
  • Beading
  • Leatherworking
  • T-shirt printing
  • Knitting and/or crochet
  • Painting 

  • Committed to safety.
  • Able to take instruction and correction when necessary.


Time Commitment

     12 hours per month, preferably one 3-hour shift each week. Other arrangements may be accommodated with the permission of the shop manager.



Shop Staffer: Jewelry & Glass Studio

Volunteer reports to Pat Glover, Jewelry Shop Manager


Summary: The jewelry shop staffer will ensure the safety of visitors to the studio and the tools contained therein.  They must report any problems to the shop manager as soon as possible. The jewelry shop staffer will assist Xerocraft members with the jewelry studio tools, when asked and if possible, with the making of their projects. They should be present in the studio on a consistent basis so that members can plan their projects for when help is available.  They are also responsible for leaving the shop clean and properly closed at the end of their shift. This position helps extend the capacity of Xerocraft to share skills and knowledge.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Monitoring the safety of visitors and the studio equipment
  • Helping members, when possible, with their jewelry projects
  • Troubleshooting problems with member projects when asked
  • Maintaining a clean shop and keeping tools in good repair


Required Qualities

  • Dependable and punctual
  • Able to commit to a regular schedule of work.
  • Good communication skills
  • Respectful and thoughtful when interacting with others. 
  • Working knowledge of basic jewelry making techniques
  • Demonstrate competence in the use and location of the following tools and machines in the studio: soldering equipment, buffing machines, rolling mill, shear, flex shaft, drill press, and basic hand tools.
  • Committed to safety.
  • Able to take instruction and correction when necessary.


Time Commitment

      12 hours per month, preferably one 3-hour shift each week. Other arrangements may be accommodated with the permission of the manager.



Shop Staffer: Laser Shop

Volunteer reports to Don Cue, Laser Shop Manager and Mark Mansfield, Asst. Shop Manager 


Summary: The Laser Shop Staffer will help Xerocraft members and visitors with their laser cutting and engraving projects. They will be present in the lab on a regular basis so that members can plan their projects for when help is available. The staffer will ensure safe use of the laser cutting machines and report any problems to the shop manager. They are also responsible for leaving the shop clean and in good order by the end of their shift. This position helps extend the capacity of Xerocraft to share skills and knowledge.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Monitoring safe use of the equipment
  • Helping members realize their laser cutting projects
  • Teaching members the basics of the vector software when appropriate
  • Troubleshooting problems with member projects
  • Maintenance of a clean and safe shop


Required Qualities

  • Respectful and kind when interacting with others (especially those seeking help)
  • Good working knowledge of vector software (e.g., Inkscape)

Shop Staffer: Machine Shop

Volunteer reports to Machine Shop co-managers Tom Walton and/or Geoff Shafer

Summary: The machine shop is focused on the transformation of metal through subtractive manufacturing, removing metal in a precise and measured fashion in order to obtain a part with exact specifications. Most members using the shop remake or modify store-bought components to fit their individual needs for a single project. Others require assistance machining a custom part that will be used in conjunction with another XC project. We are not a production shop. We actively teach paying students the basics of the metal lathe and Bridgeport vertical mill and hold advanced classes on lathe, mill, and CNC mill. We are looking for an individual who has a technical mindset. We would also like you to be willing to teach others, after becoming comfortable in the shop at XC.

Required Duties:

  • Minimum 12hr/mo, one Open Hack Saturday and one weekday evening per month
  • Ability to work independently often without direct supervision
  • Willingness to learn XC online scheduling system
  • Ability to communicate via email and/or text
  • Basic working knowledge of MS Word or similar
  • Willingness to accept constructive criticism and comply with instructions

Preferred Experiences:

  • Machine shop experience in metalworking and machine repair
  • Working knowledge of metal lathe and vertical turret mill
  • Experience using metal bandsaw, hydraulic press, bench grinder/sharpener
  • Teaching experience in trades or academic setting
  • If you can weld well, that is a huge plus

Shop Staffer: Welding Shop

Volunteer reports to  Shop Manager, Patrick Cassady

Summary: The welding shop staffer will ensure the safety of visitors to the shop and the tools and machines contained therein.  They must report any problems to the shop manager as soon as possible. The welding shop staffer will assist Xerocraft members with the welding shop tools and machines, when asked; and if possible, with the making of their projects. They should be present in the welding shop on a consistent basis so that members can plan their projects for when help is available.  They are also responsible for leaving the shop clean and properly closed at the end of their shift. This position helps extend the capacity of Xerocraft to share skills and knowledge.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Monitoring the safety of visitors and the welding shop equipment
  • Helping members, when possible, with their welding shop projects
  • Troubleshooting problems with member projects when asked
  • Maintaining a clean shop and keeping tools in good repair

Required Qualities

  • Demonstrate competence in the use and location of the plasma cutter
  • Demonstrate competence in 3 types of welding
  • Committed to safety.
  • Able to take instruction and correction when necessary.

Time Commitment

      12 hours per month, preferably one 3-hour shift each week. Other arrangements may be accommodated with the permission of the manager.

Shop Staffer: Wood Shop

Volunteer reports to Harvey Brown Wood Shop Manager or Bob Foster Assistant Manager

Summary:

The wood shop staffer will ensure the safety of visitors to the shop and the tools and machines contained therein.  They must report any problems to the shop manager as soon as possible. The wood shop staffer will assist Xerocraft members with the wood shop tools and machines, when asked; and if possible, with the making of their projects. They should be present in the wood shop on a consistent basis so that members can plan their projects for when help is available.  They are also responsible for leaving the shop clean and properly closed at the end of their shift. This position helps extend the capacity of Xerocraft to share skills and knowledge.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Monitoring the safety of visitors and the wood shop equipment
  • Helping members, when possible, with their wood shop projects
  • Troubleshooting problems with member projects when asked
  • Maintaining a clean shop and keeping tools in good repair

Required Qualities

Administrative Volunteer Roles

The roles in this section are broad-based and support all the Xerocraft shops and members.

Administrative Volunteer: Fundraising Assistant

Volunteer reports to the Director of Fundraising

Summary: Help with finding and writing grant applications and other non-profit fundraising activities

Administrative Volunteer: Marketing & Public Relations Assistant
