Minutes

  • Don: We’re having a small laser cutter donated to us on Wed or Thu.
  1. Harvey B: Discussion around documenting and communicating to staff members when work trade or free memberships have been granted and to whom.
  2. Harvey has experienced an issue with members who show up, claim to have lost a fob, but don’t show up as active members. Harvey came to find out they have some special arrangement and don’t have fobs. Harvey would like to know who they are without having to ask them.
  3. Don C: We can track this using our existing system. There are some special circumstances.
  4. Lisa G spoke to Kyle F (who runs the website) about the issue. It involves certain volunteers. We hope to have it fixed soon.
  5. Harvey B: What can be done to address current members letting other people in that don’t have key fobs.
  6. Members sometimes let non-members in by accident when they show up at the door. Some non-members think they’re members because they created an account on the website.
  7. Katherine agrees. She doesn’t like working at the laser cutter when someone arrives at the front door. It’s awkward because they can lok in and see her but she can't leave the laser cutter while it’s running.
  8. Lisa will think about policy and talk to some other members. It can be dangerous to let strangers in.
  9. Don: Don’t feel obligated to answer the door.
  10. Geoff S: We need to find a way to communicate this to the members. Members are not obligated to open the door for people they don’t know. But when they answer, they should confirm someone is a real member before letting them in. Otherwise, direct them to the website.
  11. Don answers with “Hello, how can I help you?”.
  12. Steve W: How to verify a member?
  13. You can find it on the website.
  14. Jeremy will talk to Kyle about adding membership account status on the front kiosk when a member swipes their fob or logs in.
  15. Lisa: We need to communicate to members the importance of bringing their fobs with them.
  16. Don can write some text about it.
  17. Katherine’s issue with the doorbell ringing is that it tends to be Bit Buckets kids or someone arriving to a class too early. There should be someone there beforehand to receive them.
  18. Geoff: A popup box on the kiosk that reminds people that their membership has expired?
  19. Steve W: process for member purchase of donated items
  20. We got a large donation of items in the Electronics shop. Another member wants to buy some things. Other stuff could be useful to us. We might be able to put it on craigslist or eBay. Steve wants to know if it’s ok for him to sell some things to a member. Is there a process for that?
  21. Jeremy: There are tools sale forms at the front desk.
  22. Don: Determining value: consult with knowledgeable people, consult the internet.
  23. Harvey: It’s important to check the value online.
  24. Steve W: schedule lighting circuits conversion to push button switch system (circuits 2 and 4)
  25. It will take about 1-2 hours to switch them over. During that time, the light on the south side of the first floor will have no lights. When is the best time to do that?
  26. Don: It should be convenient to Steve as well.
  27. Don: we’ll notify the public ahead of time.
  28. Jeremy: We can check the door logs for high and low access times.
  29. John: Tuesday mornings are slow.
  30. Steve can be there Wednesday morning. Jeremy can help.
  31. Don: We’ll have to inform members about the change.
  32. Katherine K: Dust collection for hand routers?
  33. The handheld routers can have dust collection connected to them.
  34. Harvey will talk to Katherine about it.
  35. If we need something, Jeremy can buy it.

John found an adapter (rockler.com/dust-right-click-connect-router-dust-port-and-plate). Bob will take a look.
