This is Tom W’s last week. He’ll be back in the Fall.
Jeremy: Swamp coolers have been maintained and deep cleaned.
Jeremy: The roof coating is finished
Jeremy: The roof stack extension of the laser cutter exhaust is finished
Jeremy: The back yard surveillance cameras have arrived and will be installed soon.
Patrick C: where to store the new CNC MacBook and how to reliably restrict access.
Cabinet A for locking it away.
Jeremy will talk to Patrick.
Don recommends a unique password for the laptop.
Steve W: Xerocraft publicity on a list of makerspaces
MAKE Magazine is putting together a database of makerspace and fab houses. Steve noticed we’re not on the list.
Don requests the link. He will take care of it.
John N: I need a price on the microscope
Steve W: Carl Zeiss Axios microscope meant for bio-sampling use. We want an electronics microscope for looking at micro-soldering. An illuminator may have been donated. Steve recommends a $2k asking price minimum.
Mark’s friend says it looks complete. It powers up. Illuminator power supply included. Mark’s friend might be interested.
Geoff: Pretty complete set of Carl Zeiss objectives. We might get more money if we sell the objectives, illuminator, etc separately.
Katherine K: Request for metal gauge in Welding Dept
22 gauge up to quarter inch thickness preferred. Digital or round analog.
Bryant: There are some in Jewelry, hanging up by the bench shear.
Jewelry has 2, and might give up one. Katherine will ask.
Katherine: We might need a conversion sheet, too.
Don: There is a drawer of precision measuring devices in the Machine Shop.
Tom’s not sure but he’ll look.
Jeremy will buy one from Amazon.
Mark M: Honeycomb platter on blue laser cutter
New honeycomb frame has arrived. It’s upstairs next to wood purchased for the laser cutter.
Mark needs ideas on how to frame and level it. If you have an idea, email the Shop Managers of Laser Cutting.
Geoff S: Turning Co-Shop Manager role in Machine Shop to Bryant for the Summer
Geoff has a lot of responsibilities with program coordination and some other duties to focus on. Bryant will take over for the Summer to supervise the shop and teach classes when necessary.
Harvey B: Making all staffers able to certify members
Don has volunteers who assist members but he hasn’t gone through full-on certification with them. It’s more involved than just knowing the machine. It would require some extra effort from Don that he’s not sure he can give right now.
Katherine doesn’t feel comfortable certifying people in welding even though she staffs there. There are members with enough skills to staff but not certify.
Harvey: Staffers would be able to tell members which machines they can or can’t use based on their visible skill.
Tom W: With some tools in Machine Shop, classes should still be required because some tools are too niche.
Harvey: We should strive for uniformity between depts.
Harvey: CNC certification is very similar to certification in the Wood Shop. People learn enough not to harm themselves or the equipment.
Geoff agrees with Tom. He’s had requests from people who only want to be certified on the horizontal band saw. We should have some safety classes on such tools.
Tom W: Drill press, band saw, pedestal grinder, possibly angle grinders would require a 90 minutes safety class.
Don C: You can create dept certifications as well as tool-specific certifications on the website.
Katherine: We should be careful not to nickel-and-dime members on certification classes and make everything a formal paid class.
Harvey agrees. Members should get certifications for less money or free.
Don: Every tool has some expense to run and we need to recoup the cost.
Bryant: Regularly scheduled recurring certification classes instead of impromptu one-one-one’s setup via email? One size fits all approach may not work.
Steve W: They should not necessarily be paid classes for certification. Some should be one-one-one. No signing up for a class. The member reaches out to a qualified staffer or Shop Manager for certification.
Don proposes we form a document of requirements for certification for each tool or dept. We should focus on making certification as standardized as possible. Make the shops as uniform as possible.
Harvey has something we can start with.
Harvey: We should only consider certifying serious paying members and work-traders.
